Indian-American Amit Kshatriya elevated to New Associate Administrator at NASA

Washington:  On September 3, 2025, NASA elevated Indian American Veteran Amit Kshatriya to the position of Associate Administrator and de facto Chief Operating Officer, the agency’s top civil service role. Along with this, he will be also serving as the senior Advisor to NASA’s acting Administrator Sean P Duffy.

Background and career journey of Amit Kshatriya

Amit Kshatriya, born in Wisconsin to Indian immigrants, educated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from California Institute of Technology and a Master’s degree in the same from the University of Texas at Austin. He joined NASA in 2003 as a software engineer, robotics engineer and spacecraft operator. With 20 years of experience, he was decorated with the agency’s Outstanding Leadership Medal for his actions as the lead flight director for the 50th expedition to the space station, along with the Silver Snoopy Award for outstanding performance that contributed to flight safety.

He most recently served as the deputy in charge of the Moon to Mars Programme in the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate at NASA, responsible for programme planning and implementation for crewed missions to the Moon through the Artemis campaign in preparation for humanity’s first mission to Mars. He embodies the American Dream through scientific excellence, highlighting the opportunities available to immigrants and their families in the American scientific landscape, paving the way to the highest levels of achievement in America’s space program.

Under his leadership, the agency will chart a bold vision to return to the Moon during President Trump’s term”.  From the above statement the sincerity of President Donald J. Trump and the NASA towards the success of the program before China in context of rising competition is clearly evident.

In addition to this, Kshatriya’s promotion signals confidence in his ability to manage public- private collaboration aimed to expand the space economy. Recent policy shifts emphasize increasing role of private companies such as SpaceX, Blue Origin and others in US Commerical Space.
