Pravasi Setu Foundation Partners with Galgotias University for International Workshop on Indian Diaspora and Indentured Labourers in Fiji

We are excited to announce that the Pravasi Setu Foundation has been honored to serve as a knowledge partner for the prestigious International Workshop on the Migration of Indian Indentured Labourers to Fiji and its Impact on Their Families. Organized by Galgotias University, this workshop aims to explore the profound historical, social, and cultural aspects of the Indian diaspora in Fiji, focusing on the descendants of indentured laborers known as Girmitiyas.

The event will take place on November 26, 2024, at Galgotias University, with experts from academia, researchers, and diaspora leaders participating to shed light on the legacy of Indian migration. The workshop will address key issues such as the socio-political and economic impacts on families left behind in India, the transformations in Indo-Fijian family structures, and the larger influence of the Girmitiya diaspora on Fijiโ€™s culture and economy.

As a knowledge partner, Pravasi Setu Foundation aligns its mission with the goals of this workshop to deepen the understanding of diaspora issues and to contribute meaningful insights to both academic and policy-making communities. Our involvement underscores our commitment to bridging gaps and strengthening the bonds between the Indian diaspora and their homeland, fostering research, dialogue, and advocacy around migration and diaspora studies.

This collaboration is part of our ongoing efforts to be at the forefront of Indian diaspora research, supporting initiatives that highlight historical experiences and contemporary challenges faced by diaspora communities.
