The Indian Diaspora in Madagascar: A Hidden Economic Powerhouse 🚢

The Indian diaspora in Africa is one of the oldest and most significant in the world, with over 3 million people spread across the continent. While much attention has been given to Indian communities in South Africa, Mauritius, Seychelles, and East Africa, Madagascar remains a lesser-known yet highly influential hub of Indo-African connections.

Indian traders first set foot on Malagasy shores in pre-colonial times, establishing commerce that later grew into permanent settlements during the colonial era. Today, despite being a small community of around 10,000 individuals—just 0.0325% of Madagascar’s population—the Indo-Malagasy community plays a disproportionately significant role in the country’s economy. Some estimates suggest that Indian-origin entrepreneurs contribute to more than 50% of Madagascar’s GDP, influencing trade, industry, and commerce at a national scale.
